Essential Amino Acids (EAAs)

WHAT ARE THEY?

The 9 essential amino acids are valine, leucine, isoleucine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, methionine, lysine, and histidine.  They are deemed essential amino acids because they are essential for overall health and performance.  Unfortunately, they are not produced naturally by the body.  Because of this, you must get them from nutrition.  However, since it is difficult to achieve the necessary amounts through food alone, supplementation is often the easiest and most popular choice.

BENEFITS:

  • Valine: Together with leucine and isoleucine, valine belongs to the group of proteinogenic amino acids, the building blocks of proteins that are produced by cells that are recorded in the genetic code of each living thing.
  • Leucine: Leucine plays a major role in the production of proteins.  Leucine is a great energy source, especially during intense athletic performance and other extreme physical activities.  It regulates glucose levels and can help prevent you from fatiguing too early during your workout.

  • Isoleucine: Isoleucine regulates blood sugar and boost energy levels in the body.  It plays a key role both in the transport of oxygen from the lungs to the various parts of the body and the production of hemoglobin, the part of the blood that contains iron. Isoleucine is important in the efficient metabolism of glucose.
  • Phenylalanine: Phenylalanine relieves pain and can help fight depression.  Its pain-relieving property can be attributed to its ability to block the enzyme
  • Threonine: Threonine is responsible for the growth and development of liver and skeletal muscles.
  • Tryptophan: Tryptophan is used to help regulate serotonin levels in the brain.
  • Methionine: Methionine serves as an effective antioxidant and helps in body metabolism at the cellular level.  It also provides the body with the sulfur and methyl elements that are Sessential for human growth.
  • Lysine: Lysine plays a key role in calcium absorption by reducing the amount of calcium being excreted in the urine.  It promotes the growth of hair, nails, teeth and bones. It also prevents bone loss that could lead to osteoporosis.

  • Histidine: Histidine is involved in the formation of proteins for growth and repair of tissues and also influences many metabolic reactions.
